Fellow Up! - An Early Career Investment for Free

How many days, months, or years until your graduation? I’m less than two months away from obtaining my AuD from Purdue University and I’ve set a countdown app on my phone so I know the exact number of days, hours, minutes, and seconds until I have my diploma in hand.

As I begin to search for a job, research state licensure, and determine what organizations I need memberships or certifications with, I have to admit, it is slightly overwhelming. Beyond the stress of preparing content and CVs to submit with applications, there is an associated fee to all of my “to dos” before getting a job. Among my preparations for my first career, there is one organization that has made it easy for new graduates. The American Academy of Audiology (AAA) offers a program for new graduates called “Fellow Up!”. It allows new grads to receive a FREE membership as a Fellow of AAA for the remainder of their graduation year. For me, this means over six months of free membership —which is a huge financial relief as I encounter many costs associated with being a new professional.

Fellowing Up is FAST:
1. Fill out an upgrade application
2. Attach a copy of your state licensure or Praxis scores
3. Send it into the Academy (can mail or fax)
4. Tell your friends and classmates to Fellow Up!

Benefits of AAA’s Fellow Up! program even extend beyond your graduation year. You save $120 on dues your first full year following graduation and $80 on your second year following graduation. Over three years, the savings are $470!

As I’ve become more involved with AAA, I’ve seen and experienced their commitment to the student population and new professionals. They actively invest time and money into the Student Academy of Audiology (SAA) because they know we are the future of the profession. As I, along with my fellow final year students, transition out of the student realm to the professional world, I can’t help but feel a little sad. I’ve really enjoyed my time with the SAA and feel like there is a lot of hope and optimism among the students. However, I am thankful that the Fellow Up! program allows us to continue working together towards the greater good of our profession.

If you have any questions about the Fellow Up! program, please visit the Academy website for more information. You are also welcome to contact me and I am happy to help assist. See you in Columbus in a couple weeks!
