September 2015 President's Corner

Welcome back!  I hope your school year is off to a great start. Over the last few years serving on SAA committees and the Board, I’ve found numerous resources that have helped my local SAA chapter flourish. Here are just a few:

  1. The Program Ideas Bank and Student Community – Has your chapter ever wanted to start a new service project or fundraiser? Did you just complete an outstanding educational event in your community?  The Program Ideas Bank is a great place to submit your ideas and see what other chapters are doing around the country. You can find the Program Ideas Bank in the Student Community. While there, be sure to check out the discussions on topics pertinent to students and post your comments, too.
  2. HEAR Chapter Grants and Scholarships  - Many chapters have taken advantage of the Humanitarian, Education, and Awareness Resources (HEAR) Chapter Grants in the last few years. With support from Starkey, over $20,000 has gone to chapters for humanitarian trips, educational events, and raising awareness of audiology in the community.  If your chapter is interested in applying for a HEAR Grant, applications are due October 1 and February 1 annually. Additionally, there are a number of other grants and scholarships available to students through the AAA Foundation throughout the year. Be sure to check the Foundation's Web site to stay informed on all the scholarships and grants!
  3. YOU! – The greatest resource within our organization is YOU!  Without our members, the SAA would not be able to complete thousands of hours of service, educating communities, reaching out to legislators about key issues, or any number of things you have done. Members across the country have been looking for more ways to connect with other members and to collaborate on projects. The SAA Board is always available to help in any way we can. In fact, we have conference calls scheduled with chapter representatives throughout the year to help facilitate communication nationally, locally, and individually. If your chapter is looking for answers to questions or to connect with another chapter, reach out to the Board members and we can help you find the right answers or contacts. With you as the future of audiology, there is a lot to look forward to.

The SAA Board of Directors has been busy planning for this year, and we couldn’t be more excited! I think I can speak for the Board by saying how privileged we feel to be able to lead our student organization this year. Thank you for the opportunity.

Please feel free to contact me at if you have any questions or comments throughout the year!
