SUMMARY:Both Sides of the Booth: A Conversation with Audiologists and Students with Hearing Loss
DESCRIPTION:Join the national SAA for a meaningful conversation with audiology students and professionals who have hearing loss. This panel offers an honest look at their experiences in the classroom\, in clinical training\, and in daily communication—highlighting both the challenges they navigate and the strengths they bring to the profession. Bring your questions and take part in an open dialogue about accessibility\, inclusion\, and how we can better support future audiologists with hearing loss. \nRegistration is FREE for all audiology students. \nRegister \nSpeakers\nKatie Colborn\, AuD \n \nKatie Colborn\, AuD\, is a pediatric audiologist at Cleveland Clinic. She precepts third-year audiology students from the Northeast Ohio Audiology Consortium (NOAC). Dr. Colborn graduated from Kent State University with a Bachelor of Science in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. She earned her AuD from the Northeast Ohio AuD Consortium (NOAC). Her clinical interests are pediatric electrophysiology\, diagnostics\, and hearing aids. She has worn\nhearing aids since childhood and grew up signing with her Deaf grandparents. \nShannon Culbertson\, AuD \n \nShannon Culbertson earned her AuD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She works full-time as a pediatric audiologist at UNC Health\, supporting kids with their communication needs through diagnostics and hearing aid management. She is a clinical supervisor for graduate audiology students and was awarded the UNC Preceptor of the Year Award in 2025. Dr. Culbertson is passionate about empowering patients AND graduate students with hearing loss towards greater understanding of their own communication needs\, translating into greater self-advocacy skills. \nMadeline Colello \n \nMadeline Colello is a second-year doctoral student in Audiology at James Madison University\, where she also earned her bachelor’s degree in Psychology. Currently\, she serves as the secretary for the JMU SAA Chapter. She has served as a guest lecturer for many years at the VCU School of Medicine and the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine\, helping raise awareness about hearing loss. Madeline has been a bilateral cochlear implant user for over twenty years. This has led to her passion for supporting and advocating for those individuals navigating similar experiences. Her clinical interests are cochlear implants\, pediatric audiology\, and aural rehabilitation. She looks forward to working closely with children and their families\, building meaningful connections and supporting them throughout their journey with hearing loss. \nTin Nguyen \n \nTin Nguyen was born and raised in New Orleans\, graduating from the University of New Orleans (UNO) with a Bachelor’s in Exercise Physiology. Tin is a second-year AuD student at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center—New Orleans. As a non-traditional AuD student\, Tin discovered audiology a year before applying to audiology graduate school. It was the best professional decision Tin has made. Tin works as a paramedic part-time yet envisions working as an audiologist for a very long time. Tin’s previous clinical experience consists of: hearing aids and VNG with exposure to ABR. As of now\, the area that piques Tin’s interest most is vestibular assessment. \nZachary Owens \n Zachary (Zach) Owens was born in Oklahoma City\, Oklahoma\, and raised in Chicago\, Illinois. Zach is a second‑year AuD student at Illinois State University. Zach’s personal journey — being born profoundly deaf and raised with cochlear implants — is what fuels a passion for audiology. Zach strives to support others who have faced similar experiences similar whether it is related to hearing loss\, socio‑cultural transitions or identity shifts\, audiologic rehabilitation\, or auditory therapy. Zach is passionate about American Sign Language and Signed English\, which are part of Zach’s native language background. Zach advocates for individuals throughout their hearing journeys\, whether they identify with Deaf or Hard of Hearing culture or the hearing world. This unique perspective strengthens Zach’s aspirations to provide advocacy\, accessibility\, and empower others in their communication journeys.

DESCRIPTION:National SAA is is proud to present a special Virtual Education Series lecture on Forensic Audiology featuring Christopher Spankovich\, AuD\, PhD\, MPH. This engaging session will explore the intersection of audiology and the legal system\, highlighting the role of audiologists in occupational noise exposure cases\, medico-legal consultation\, expert testimony\, and hearing conservation standards. Attendees will gain insight into real-world applications of forensic principles\, ethical considerations\, and the expanding opportunities for audiologists in legal and public health arenas. \nJoin us for an informative discussion that broadens the scope of clinical practice and showcases how audiology extends beyond the clinic and into the courtroom. \nAs a special member benefit\, registration is free and only available to national SAA members. \nRegister \nSpeaker\nChristopher Spankovich\, AuD\, PhD\, MPH \n \nChristopher Spankovich\, AuD\, PhD\, MPH\, is a tenured professor and vice chair of research for the Department of Otolaryngology Head Neck Surgery at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Dr. Spankovich is a clinician-scientist with a translational research program focused on the prevention of acquired forms of hearing loss\, tinnitus\, and sound sensitivity. His research includes clinical trials of otoprotectants\, epidemiological studies of determinants (e.g.\, dietary quality) of hearing loss/tinnitus\, basic research in thermal stress for prevention of ototoxicity\, and translational research on the effects of noise on auditory physiology/perception. His research has been funded by industry\, federal\, and professional bodies. He has published over 100 articles and book chapters (more than 65 in peer-reviewed journals) and has given over 60 national and international presentations. Dr. Spankovich continues to practice clinically with a special interest in tinnitus\, sound sensitivity\, ototoxicity\, hearing conservation\, and advanced diagnostics. He holds Adjunct faculty status with Salus/Drexel University and serves as an associate editor for the International Journal of Audiology. He is a former board member for the American Academy of Audiology and currently serves on the board of the Accreditation Commission for Audiology Education (ACAE). Dr. Spankovich also provides consultant services for medico-legal cases.

For a child with hearing loss\, the real world is a noisy classroom\, busy cafeteria\, or chaotic playground. Educational audiologists are crucial to the navigation and support of students with hearing loss and amplification devices in their real world settings\, outside of the audiology clinic. Join us for this Virtual Education Series webinar with Alyse Zucker\, AuD and MaryKate Bisaillon\, AuD\, to discuss how Educational Audiology differs from more clinical roles\, and learn more about a day in the life of an Educational Audiologist across different settings! \nAs a special member benefit\, registration is free and only available to national SAA members. \nRegister \nSpeakers\n\n\n\nMaryKate Bisaillon\, AuD\, CCC-A\, is an educational audiologist at Horace Mann School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (HMS)\, a Boston Public School (BPS) dual language program of American Sign Language and English. Dr. Bisaillon serves as the specialist in providing individualized audiologic management of students with hearing loss. She has the privilege of working collaboratively with educational team members to best support and honor the intersectional identities of students and their families.\n \nDr. Bisaillon graduated with her Doctorate of Audiology and Bachelor’s of Arts from the University of Connecticut. During her doctoral program\, MaryKate completed the Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental & Related Disabilities (LEND) Fellowship\, an interdisciplinary training program focusing on improving health care and services for individuals with disabilities. Her transition from clinical to education practice has shaped her into a passionate advocate for language access and educational equity. Beyond HMS\, Dr. Bisaillon has served as a clinical site instructor and guest lecturer for undergraduate and doctoral programs\, fueled by a commitment to dismantling healthcare disparities and empowering the next generation of culturally competent audiologists.\n  \n\n\nAlyse P. Zucker\, AuD\, CCC-A\, is a dedicated educational audiologist serving students throughout the Boston Public Schools. With a career rooted in the Boston educational community\, Dr. Zucker has established a reputation as a dedicated advocate for students and their success within the least restrictive environment.\n\n \nIn her current role in Boston Public Schools\, Dr. Zucker supports a team of providers specializing in educational programming and therapeutic approaches for students who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing.  Her responsibilities include navigating complex organizational structures to support both staff and students\, managing and organizing hearing assistive technology used throughout the district\, and collaborating with administrators to strategize and support the diverse needs of students in an urban school district.\n\n \nDr. Zucker earned her Doctorate of Audiology from Washington University in St. Louis\, School of Medicine. She also holds a Special Education Administration license from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Beyond her role in Boston Public Schools\, Dr. Zucker is an adjunct course lecturer at the MGH Institute of Health Professions and serves as a clinical site instructor and guest lecturer for both undergraduate and doctoral programs. She emphasizes rigorous standards and inclusive practices to ensure every student has opportunities for a more equitable future.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in Speech Pathology & Audiology from Kent State University. Born with a unilateral hearing loss\, Jeremiah’s lifelong experiences in audiology clinics inspired his passion for the field and commitment to support individuals with hearing loss. He currently serves as the Programs Committee Co-Chair for the National SAA Board of Directors and previously served as the DEI Liaison and Committee Chair within his local chapter. He is also active within his church\, serving as the youth department president\, graphic designer\, and worship leader\, and serves as the COGIC Mid-North Regional Young Men in Ministry Coordinator for Michigan\, Ohio\, and Western Pennsylvania. In his free time\, he enjoys running\, fishing\, and baking. \nCaroline Henning \nCaroline Henning is a second-year Doctor of Audiology student at the University of Iowa. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Communication Science and Disorders from the University of Pittsburgh\, where her passion for audiology was sparked by observing interprofessional collaboration in a cleft palate clinic in rural Pennsylvania. Seeing the vital role audiologists played in a multidisciplinary care team inspired her to pursue a career focused on improving communication outcomes across the lifespan. Caroline’s clinical interests include pediatric diagnostics\, hearing aids and cochlear implants\, and interprofessional care for children with craniofacial conditions. She is especially passionate about early intervention\, family-centered counseling\, and advocating for accessible hearing healthcare for underserved populations. \nAt the University of Iowa\, Caroline serves as the President for her university’s Student Academy of Audiology (SAA) Chapter. Outside of audiology\, Caroline enjoys taking hot yoga classes\, spending time outdoors on walks or hikes\, and exploring new restaurants with friends. She is excited for the opportunity to network with audiologists and fellow students\, learn from their experiences\, and help spread awareness about important advocacy issues through SAA newsletters and outreach efforts. \nBraidyn Milner \n \n\n\n\nBraidyn Milner is a third-year AuD student at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. She received her bachelor’s degree in Communication Disorders and Sciences from Arkansas State University in 2023. She fell in love with audiology after being exposed to the field by a great mentor and taking introductory courses in her undergraduate studies. Braidyn’s professional interests include pediatric audiology and vestibular disorders\, implantable devices\, and aural rehabilitation. She is especially passionate about equitable and patient centered audiological care for children with autism spectrum disorder and other developmental differences. \nBraidyn currently serves as the Chapter Relations committee chair for National Student Academy of Audiology. She previously held the position of President for her local chapter and has experience working with Chapter Relations initiatives through her time as a committee volunteer for the 2024-2025 term. Outside of audiology you can find Braidyn reading\, writing\, taking walks with her dog\, and trying various forms of artistic expression. She is excited to embark on this journey and network with chapters across the nation to help them lead\, advocate\, and educate on the wonderful field of audiology. \n\n\n\n\n\nJohn Williams \n\n John McKenzie Williams\, MS\, is a third-year Doctor of Audiology (AuD) student at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson\, Mississippi. He holds a Master of Science in Population Health Science from UMMC and a Master of Science in Biological Sciences from Mississippi College. John will complete his clinical externship at Ochsner LSU Health in Shreveport\, LA\, during the 2026–2027 academic year. His clinical and research interests include cochlear implants\, pediatric electrophysiology\, vestibular audiology\, and health outcomes research. John has been actively involved with the Student Academy of Audiology since 2023\, serving as founder and President of the UMMC chapter and as a member of the national SAA Education Committee. He plans to pursue a career as a clinical-research faculty member with a focus on mentorship and evidence-based care. She is the lead audiologist for the NICU newborn hearing program at Brenner Children’s Hospital. Her areas of specialization include: neonatal hearing assessment/care coordination\, pediatric diagnostics/auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing\, and traditional as well as bone-anchored hearing aids. She is Board-Certified in Pediatric Audiology (BC-PA) and has also obtained the ABA certification and CH-AP certificate. \nKendall Carroll\, AuD\, CH-TM \n \nKendall Carroll\, AuD\, CH-TM\, is a clinical audiologist who earned her doctorate from Vanderbilt University after completing a year-long clinical fellowship at Massachusetts Eye and Ear in Boston. Since 2022\, she has practiced at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist in Winston-Salem\, North Carolina. Dr. Carroll provides services ranging from comprehensive diagnostic evaluations to individualized care utilizing amplification and other assistive devices. She has a clinical focus in tinnitus management\, and works to support this population with evidence-based education and counseling. Her goal is to provide each patient with the personalized support needed to understand their hearing loss and improve their quality of life. \nSara Jagger\, AuD\, PhD\, BC-VA \n \nSara Jagger\, AuD\, PhD\, BC-VA\, is the Director of Clinical Science and Physician Relations at The American Institute of Balance (AIB)\, a research collaborator with Mayo Clinic Florida\, and an adjunct professor for multiple universities. She previously served as a clinical audiologist at Mayo Clinic\, specializing in vestibular diagnostics and treatment and otologic disorders. During her tenure\, Dr. Jagger coordinated patient care across interdisciplinary teams in neurotology\, otolaryngology\, neurology\, physical therapy\, and rehabilitation medicine. Prior to her work at Mayo Clinic\, she was the Chief Medical Officer for AIB Clinics and a faculty member for AIB education workshops. Dr. Jagger earned her bachelor’s degree from The Pennsylvania State University\, her Doctor of Audiology (AuD) degree from A.T. Still University’s Arizona School of Health Sciences\, and her PhD in Health Sciences from Nova Southeastern University. She is currently pursuing her MBA at Johns Hopkins Carey Business School. \nHeather Rauch\, AuD\, CH-AP \nHeather Rauch\, AuD\, CH-AP\, has been an audiologist at Boston Children’s Hospital since 2006. With a clinical focus in diagnostics and amplification\, she has played a vital role in advancing pediatric audiology services within the hospital and community. She was instrumental in the development of the Amplification Program in 2015 and currently manages the program which includes over 25 audiologists and audiology assistants. Her leadership ensures high standards of care and the integration of best practices in pediatric hearing aid and technology management. \nSince 2010\, Dr. Rauch has been actively involved in clinical education\, serving as a preceptor for audiology externs and mentoring the next generation of pediatric audiologists. She became CH-AP certified in 2016. \nDr. Rauch has an extensive history of presenting at national and regional professional conferences\, sharing her expertise in pediatric amplification\, clinical program development and best practices in audiologic care. She is recognized for her commitment to excellence in clinical care\, education and innovation in pediatric hearing healthcare. \nElizabeth Striegl\, AuD\, CH-EdAud \nElizabeth Striegl\, AuD\, CH-EdAud\, is an educational audiologist working at the Lorain County Educational Service Center. She received her bachelor’s in communication sciences and disorders from the College of Wooster. She then went on to obtain her Clinical Doctorate of Audiology from the Northeast Ohio AuD Consortium (NOAC) through the University of Akron. She worked clinically in a retail setting for 5 years before transitioning to a career as an educational audiologist. She currently lives in Lorain County\, Ohio\, with her husband and serves on the Ohio Academy of Audiology Board and is active in the Educational Audiology Association. \n

DESCRIPTION:Animals have been critical in translational audiology research for years but now we are giving back to them and learning what their world is like and about our own ear and hearing evolution. In this presentation we explore the up and coming topic of animal audiology and FETCHLAB. \nRegister \nSpeakers\n \nPeter “Skip” Scheifele\, MDr\, PhD\, LCDR USN \nProfessor and Executive Director of the overall FETCHLAB™USA and Director of UC FETCHLAB. \nDr. Scheifele is a Navy Vietnam era and Cold War era veteran; submarine sonar and weapons officer/Navy Diver and Naval Oceanographer. He directed the Navy Marine Mammal Technology Program at the Naval Underwater Systems Center\, specializing in marine mammal bioacoustics research and was Head Trainer at Mystic Aquarium. He was awarded the Order of the Decibel and a presidential citation by President George Bush Sr. for his pioneering work with marine mammal bioacoustics. He trained and handled narcotics and bomb dogs for the U.S. Coast Guard. \nPresently\, he directs UC FETCHLAB world-renowned for investigating animal audiology\, vocal mechanisms and bioacoustics and conducting animal audiology. Peter serves as the U.S. Army SOCOM and DOD subject matter expert (SME) on tactical military working dog explosive ordnance disposal\, audiology and Canine PTSD for ARO. He is also the canine audiologist for Cincinnati S.W.A.T. He is Professor of animal bioacoustics\, audiology\, and human neuroaudiology in the College of Allied Health Sciences\, as well as otology and neurology in the College of Medicine. \nUniversity of Cincinnati FETCHLAB is an internationally renowned animal hearing and bioacoustics laboratory and hearing clinic for animals. They conduct hearing screening and full audiological assessment and imaging for dogs. The FETCHLAB is the first and only hearing (audiology) clinic for animals in the United States capable of running full audiological diagnostic testing and analyses. They see dogs and exotic animals (wild\, zoo\, reserves) from all over the world. They are responsible for noise impacts and animal audiology for the Georgia Aquarium\, Mystic Aquarium\, Newport Aquarium\, and the Indianapolis Zoo. \nExotic animal audiology research is being conducted by Peter and FETCHLAB staff on elephants and cheetahs in South Africa; reindeer and muskox in Alaska; dolphins\, walrus\, and elephants at the Indianapolis Zoo. \n \nMichael Berick \nMichael Berick completed his undergraduate work at The Ohio State University where he majored in Speech and Hearing Science. He then completed his AuD at the University of Cincinnati where he became very involved as a manager of FETCHLAB. SUMMARY:Intentional Stress
DESCRIPTION:Resilience is the ability to function with and recover from stress. We all have the capacity to be resilient. It is a mindset where we make an active decision to adapt\, cope or respond. It is also a muscle which can be strengthened with intentional training. In Dr. Shepard’s previous presentation\, “Stress Management 101\,” he discussed strategies to help anyone respond to and recover from stress. In this brief\, Dr. Shepard will encourage listeners to deliberately seek stress to build resilience. Intentional discomfort combined with a proper mindset and management strategy\, trains the mind and body to effectively respond to future stressors. He will propose ten ways you can intentionally induce stress and tie in management strategies to prepare you to accomplish the given challenges posed. \nRegister \nSpeaker\n \nLieutenant Commander (LCDR) Kyle H. Shepard\, AuD is an Audiologist for the United States Navy. Prior to his commissioning in August 2013\, he received his Bachelor of Arts from The Ohio State University where he double majored in Speech and Hearing Science and Psychology. He then obtained his Doctorate in Audiology from the Northeast Ohio AuD Consortium. His final-year externship was completed at the Cleveland Clinic from 2012-2013 where he was required to complete seven rotations\, each specializing in a different area covering the scope of Audiology. He is currently stationed at Naval Air Station Patuxent River where he is the Branch Head of Aeromedical Monitoring & Analysis as well as the Science & Technology Portfolio Manager of Helmet Systems and Auditory Performance within the Naval Air Warfare Center – Aircraft Division Command. There he manages and collaborates with engineers and other medical specialties working on research projects contributing to areas in advanced hearing protection and communication systems\, active noise reduction\, 3D scanning\, 3D printing\, in-the-ear noise dosimetry\, and human performance. \nLCDR Shepard has been a stress management/resilience instructor for the Navy for nine years and ran the stress management program (CgOSC) for Naval Hospital Guam for two and a half years which became recognized for several best practices and the #1 CgOSC program in Navy Medicine at the time. He is also a Certified Fitness Leader (CFL) for the Navy and a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Kyle has been a fitness and martial arts instructor in his community for three years. In 2021\, he set a Guinness World Record for most chest-to-ground burpees in three minutes.
