On Wednesday, January 10, Florida State University students participated in Hearing Technology Day sponsored by the Florida Academy of Audiology and partnered with the Florida Coalition for Spoken Language Options. Our undergraduate students involved with the Student Academy of Audiology (SAA) and in the Communications Sciences & Disorders Program, were able to advocate and speak to Florida legislators. They asked for their support and educated them on the importance of passing legislation that ensures that children have access to medically necessary hearing aids through their private insurance. Each team had the opportunity to meet with legislator’s staff and address multiple components of the bill as well as answer any questions that arose. It was a wonderful experience meeting with graduate students, families, and other audiologists who live throughout Florida to advocate for children and to educate ourselves on the legislation that directly affects our profession. Having a direct role and showing our elected officials how vital this new legislation was quite impactful for us as students. We were also able to have a brief tour of the House of Representatives and the Senate which was such a great opportunity. We look forward to continuing to participate in advocacy events in the future, and seeing this bill passed!
