Get Involved in Community Outreach

One organization that can be a great resource is the Sertoma Club, whose mission is “To improve the quality of life today for those at risk or impacted by hearing loss through education and support”. Sertoma Club has a relationship and initiative with the Hearing Charities of America in which they collect donated hearing aids and refurbish them to provide affordable amplification for all those in need. Information can be found on the Sertoma Website.

Another organization that has a similar initiative is Lions Clubs International, whose mission is “To empower volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace and promote international understanding through Lions clubs.” They have a similar national program called the Hearing Aid Recycling Program (HARP) and more information can be found on the Lions Club International Website.

One more option for community outreach is with the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA)’s Walk4Hearing. There are some walks coming up this fall in cities across the nation. Emails will be sent to those chapters with a walk nearby encouraging them to participate if they are able. If your chapter is not able to physically participate, or if there is not an event within a reasonable distance, you can still participate through fundraising efforts to donate to the cause. The dates for the walks can be found on the HLAA Website. Questions? Contact Ronnie Adler, National Walk4Hearing Manager.

We highly encourage chapters who are looking for new service projects or community outreach to get in touch with either of these organizations or another local service organization to collaborate on either existing or new service projects in your communities. If you have any questions or would like more information, please feel free to contact the SAA's Development Committee Chair.
