Maya Angelou. One of her famous quotes that sticks with me is “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel”.
Something on your bucket list?
I have a looong travel bucket list! I hope the next place is Singapore. I’d love to do a TreeTop Walk and then try all of the authentic Singaporean dishes.
Who has been your biggest inspiration or support throughout graduate school?
All of my professors at the University of Pittsburgh are very supportive. Two people that inspire me most are Dr. Elaine Mormer for sparking my interest in audiology and encouraging me to take advantage of every opportunity, and Dr. Catherine Palmer whose leadership skills I admire.
Your favorite or most rewarding experience with a patient?
Seeing patients at the Squirrel Hill Health Center, through a program started by Rachel Fryatt (read more here!), has been one of my favorite experiences so far. The patients are not able to afford hearing health services, and many are refugees who may require interpreters to communicate with us about their hearing loss. It is rewarding to see the smiles of the patients and their families after working with them. Becky Peñaranda and Ryan Shea are current Schweitzer Fellows who have sustained the program.

Malala Yousafzai. At a young age and even in the face of adversity, she has inspired millions to advocate for women’s rights to receive a formal, twelve-year education.
Something on your bucket list?
Seeing Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) would be amazing! The science behind the phenomenon is incredible and I love reading about it.
Who has been your biggest inspiration or support throughout graduate school?
My mom! She’s been my best friend and confidant since day one. We talk or text almost daily and she always knows the right thing to say.
What has been your favorite or most rewarding experience with a patient?
One of the most rewarding comments I hear: “these hearing aids saved our marriage.”
