Northern Illinois University Hustles for Hearing at Annual 5K Event
On September 30 the Northern Illinois University SAA hosted the seventh annual Hustle for Hearing K run/walk at Hopkins Park in DeKalb, IL. Hustle for Hearing is our biggest philanthropic event of the year, helping to promote wellness, educate on hearing health care, and raise money for an outstanding local organization, Hear the Cheers. Hear the Cheers is a local non-profit organization created by thirteen-year-old, Eliza Peters, which raises funds for children in the Chicago area who are in need of hearing aids, assistive listening devices, and the associated audiology services.
Our day began with breakfast for participants and their families, interactive activities promoting audiology and hearing health, and a raffle with prizes donated by community businesses. We were joined by founder, Eliza Peters, as well as Sarah Spain of ESPN, who kicked off the race. This year we hosted over 80 runners, including students, faculty, community members, and friends of Hear the Cheers, with donations coming to over $2,900! This year, the NIU SAA was awarded the HEAR Chapter Grant from the AAA Foundation, which allowed the chapter to reduce operating costs and maximize the donation we were able to provide to Hear the Cheers. Through the generosity of the AAAF, the hard work of our many student volunteers, the participation of runners, and supporters, we were proud to make Hustle for Hearing 2017 one of our biggest and most successful events to date.
