The University of South Florida (USF) AuD program students and faculty have been busy over the summer months advocating for “Clear Communication!” While abiding by CDC guidelines, face masks and social distancing can cause communication breakdowns for Deaf and hard of hearing populations. The USF SAA chapter, along with several other USF Communications and Science Disorders (CSD) clubs, joined forces to help raise nearly $4,000 in donations and supplies for their “Clear Communication Campaign.” These funds were used to purchase and donate clear face masks and face shields for graduate students, providers, and patients of audiological, speech, and interpreting services in the USF CSD department. Additionally, SAA student members created an educational brochure and infographic for community medical centers highlighting research on the importance of clear communication for these populations. This dedication to helping those with hearing loss created a buzz in our local Tampa community and was featured on several local news stations.
