On March 10, 2018 the Wayne State University SAA Chapter and audiology externs from Henry Ford Hospital volunteered at Family Matters! 2018. Family Matters! is an annual, day-long workshop for families that have children who are deaf or hard of hearing. The workshop is a collaborative effort between the University of Michigan’s Pediatric Audiology department, Michigan Hands and Voices, and DeafBlind Central.
Family Matters! is an event for the entire family. Parent sessions are held throughout the day. While parents attend keynote presentations and breakout sessions, the children are grouped into teams based on age. Each team has their own special day planned, full of fun activities that are centered around the theme of the workshop.
This year’s Family Matters! was all about safety. Wayne State’s SAA members helped the kids participate in Tae-Kwon-Do, yoga, games, and other activities. Additionally, the University of Michigan’s Safe Kids program gave presentations teaching the children how to be safe passengers, pedestrians, and drivers. They also learned about fire and water safety and cyber safety. WSU SAA volunteers had a blast and are already excited to be a part of next year’s Family Matters! workshop.
Externship panels are great but Fowling definitely makes them better! On March 26, 2018 Wayne State University’s Chapter of SAA shared a fun-filled afternoon at the Fowling Warehouse in Hamtramck, Michigan with current 4th-year audiology externs. The footballs were flying as fast as the questions and answers. The Henry Ford Hospital and Sound Advice Audiology externs provided insight to best navigate and prepare for the externship experience. Their well-informed advice regarding the application process, interview experiences, and making the transition from student to extern will definitely set WSU-SAA members up for success!
