Diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, (DEIB) is an important topic for both current audiologists and audiology students to keep in mind throughout their clinical practice. As future audiologists, it is imperative that we stay informed of DEIB topics as they relate to the patients we see. If you are looking for an introduction to all things DEIB, I recommend you visit the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging web page on the Academy’s website. If you are looking for additional resources that are applicable to both the clinic and classroom, look no further than the national SAA website! There is a resource on the national SAA website that provides students with tips about navigating issues pertaining to DEIB in the clinic and classroom.
Being the recipient of a microaggression in clinical rotations or classes can be both jarring and hurtful. Speak up if you ever experience a microaggression or hostility from a patient. If something makes you uncomfortable, say something to a trusted faculty member or preceptor. Whether you are a first-year or extern, your program is there to support you through any difficult patient encounters you may experience. Additionally, national SAA is here to help you navigate the challenge of graduate school, including concerns related to DEIB. If there is an audiology DEIB resource you believe would be helpful for you and other students, please let me know by sending me an email at lindeealvarez.saa@gmail.com.
For anyone who is as passionate about DEIB in audiology as I am, national SAA is excited to introduce a new subcommittee this year: The Social Responsibility Subcommittee. Previously, national SAA sought to fulfill its DEIB goals on the committee level via meta volunteers; however, in an effort to create a more permanent spot for DEIB discussion within national SAA, the decision was made to establish the Social Responsibility Subcommittee to continue to promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging within the audiology student community. I encourage all students who are invested in DEIB to consider volunteering for this exciting new opportunity.
