As we get closer to the Spring semester, many students are starting to turn their attention to preparing for the Praxis. The Praxis Examination in Audiology is an important milestone in the educational journey of audiology students, indicating that students have completed their “formal” schooling and are adequately prepared for their career as an audiologist. While students may be able to graduate without a passing Praxis score, it is required for licensure and certification in most states and professional organizations. With many licenses and job offers contingent on a passing Praxis score, passing the Praxis can feel overwhelming for many students, and they may turn to trusted advisors for advice on improving their chances at passing. Here are some tips for advisors on preparing students for this important milestone exam!
Encourage Students to Take the Praxis Early
Towards the end of their third year, most students are preparing to enter their final year externships. Many programs may require students to take comprehensive exams at this time, testing them on all of the knowledge they have learned in graduate school thus far. This is a great time for students to consider taking the Praxis as well, as much of the information will overlap and be fresh in their minds. In addition, taking the Praxis before externship will give students the chance to adjust to their new schedule without worrying about squeezing in studying.
Host Study Sessions
Work with the SAA chapters to set up Praxis study sessions where students can work together to learn the material. Chapters can consider hosting “Trivia Bowls” as a fun way to test themselves on different questions.
Point Students in the Direction of Pre-Existing Resources
The Educational Testing Service (ETS) offers a variety of resources to help students prepare for the Praxis, including a practice exam and study companion. These resources can help students better prepare for the types of questions that may be used during the real exam.
Offer Support and Encouragement
Even after studying and preparing, some students may fail their first attempts at the Praxis and need to take the exam again. Take time to remind students that by completing their doctorate program, they have already learned everything they need to know to succeed as an audiologist, and that one setback will not determine their career. Encourage them to continue working hard, while also focusing on everything they have accomplished in graduate school. Try to connect them with older students or alumni who may have been in their shoes and have advice to share.
Remind Students to Prioritize Mental Well-being
Even during the busiest times in graduate school, it is important that students prioritize their own mental well-being. Encourage busy students to take a break from studying to take a walk or do a fun activity. Getting a good night’s sleep, eating healthy foods, and positive self-talk are just as important for adequately preparing for a big test as studying.
The Praxis is just one piece of the audiology educational journey – but it is an important one. By preparing students for this big exam early on, and providing them with the resources to succeed, we can better prepare them for the next steps in their audiology career: externship, graduation, and starting their first job.
