Break from Audiology: Time Management

  • Resources

By Chelsea Tynes

Time is such a precious asset and because of the essence of time, it is highly important to manage it wisely. We talk a lot about time management and planning but what exactly is time management? Personally, I like to define time management as the ability to use your time and resources in a productive manner in order to complete tasks efficiently based on your schedule. Good time management involves organization, careful planning, and implementing effective time management tools and strategies into your daily routine – this requires having some level of motivation!

Before evaluating time management techniques that might be beneficial for you, consider some helpful tools for time management. Tools such as planners, to-do lists, productivity apps on your smartphone, calendars (physical and/or digital), and sticky note reminders can be wonderful resources to help you with staying organized and be well on your way to effectively managing your time. Remember, it is always important to do what is best suited for you so allow time for trial and error. Once you find the tool(s) that are most suitable for you, try to use time management techniques such as recognizing your distractions and minimizing them and setting aside dedicated times for recurring tasks, like homework, studying, or research to maximize your productivity.

If your schedule is beginning to feel like a bit of a balancing act, take the time to evaluate what works, and what does not. Here are some strategies to take control of your calendar:

  • Use a digital or physical calendar to keep track of important dates
  • Plan out your schedule for the week in advance
  • Based on your schedule, write a to-do list of priority tasks each day
  • Make an effort to limit distractions
  • Set reminders
  • Budget sufficient time for meals and rest in your schedule
  • Keep an open mind, be realistic, and be willing to make adjustments as needed

With proper time management, you can take control of a busy schedule and tackle your to-do list with reduced stress. Be patient with yourself, as time management can be a challenge at times. Over time, you will learn what strategies work best for you. If you struggle with time management from time to time, rest assured that you are human and it is a skill that will improve with practice!
