We’re just four months into 2020, and what a year it has been already! I was looking back at past Advisor’s Corners, and noticed the January article focused on goals. Many of us started out 2020 with ambition, clearly defined goals, and positivity. However, the last few months have been rather stressful, and more than likely changed your outlook or ability to reach the previously set goals.
Many graduate students may be experiencing frustration or anxiety with concerns about clinical hours, job searches, and more. Instead of causing more stress during an already difficult time, this could be an opportunity to reassess your New Year’s Goals, keeping in mind the current circumstances.
In January, we touched on SMART goals, which are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely. What was achievable and/or realistic four months ago may not be anymore. I urge you to review and update your goals, or create goals if you have not yet, and make sure they are still relevant and realistic.
In general, but especially during a time like this, goals do not have to be career-oriented. Some ideas for goals can be: meditate daily, take one day per week away from audiology, disconnect from social media one day per week, etc.
Just like in January, I challenge you to critically evaluate what you want to accomplish in 2020. However, ensure they are achievable given the current climate, and try to pick goals that you will enjoy reaching for.
Stay healthy!
