January 19, 2017 Chapter Chatter

The SAA Chapter at Washington University in St. Louis has had a busy semester organizing and participating in many educational and humanitarian activities for our chapter members! We participated in several hearing screening events, and our advocacy and fundraising committees collaborated to spread awareness about our profession as well as the risks of noise exposure.

We are particularly proud to have participated again in St. Louis’s Walk4Hearing. Not only was it a great opportunity to raise awareness about hearing loss with our families, friends, and the Saint Louis community, but it was also a wonderful opportunity to collaborate with our peers in the Deaf Education program. Together we raised almost $1,000.

We also participated in several hearing screening events throughout the St. Louis area and Missouri, including a Special Olympics Healthy Hearing event and the Give Kids a Smile bi-annual clinic. Give Kids a Smile is a St. Louis non-profit organization that aims to provide comprehensive dental care, audiology screenings, home hygiene materials and educational materials to underserved children. We are proud to be a regular participant in this clinic. Many AuD students from our SAA chapter volunteer to perform otoscopy, tympanometry, and age-appropriate hearing screenings to the underserved pediatric population each year.

We were also thrilled to host an event for all AuD and Deaf Education students with Ms. Susan Bonner, the Project Director for the Missouri Deafblind Technical Assistance Project. She gave a wonderful presentation educating us all about Deafblindness and the many great resources available to this population.

Together with our advocacy committee, the fundraising committee organized a bake sale to raise money for our chapter and most importantly, to educate any individuals interested in purchasing our sweet treats about the dangers of noise exposure. Our bake sale volunteers were happy to provide free foam ear plugs to all visitors! Our chapter also held an ETY plug sale. Members of our chapter were able to educate family and friends about the benefits of ETY hearing protection versus foam ear plugs. Many of our members even chose to purchase them as holiday gifts!

We cannot wait to see what the Spring semester will bring!
