Student Tips for San Antonio: Make the Most of AAA 2026 on a Budget

A student trip to San Antonio for the AAA Annual Convention 2026 can be both inspiring and budget-friendly with the right planning. With the convention taking place April 22–25 at the Henry B. González Convention Center, students can take advantage of the city’s walkability, affordable food options, and plenty of free things to do while still getting the most out of the convention experience.

Make the Most of Convention Perks

AAA 2026 offers open registration for all attendees and a wide range of educational programming designed to help you grow your clinical knowledge and expand your network. The convention’s Digital Convention Guide and curated educational tracks make it easy to plan your schedule in advance. Mapping out the sessions and events you want to attend can help you maximize your time—and avoid last-minute expenses for transportation or meals between sessions.

Choose Budget-Friendly Lodging

San Antonio offers a variety of hotel options, and booking through the AAA housing block can help attendees find convenient accommodations near the convention center.

One particularly student-friendly option is the La Quinta Inn & Suites by Wyndham San Antonio Riverwalk, which is located within walking distance of the Henry B. González Convention Center and the River Walk. Staying at a hotel like this allows you to avoid daily transportation costs and makes it easy to pop back to your room between sessions.

Students can also save by:

  • Sharing rooms with classmates to split costs
  • Booking early within the convention housing block for the best availability
  • Choosing hotels slightly outside the downtown core while still staying near public transit or within walking distance

Skip the Car and Explore on Foot

San Antonio’s downtown is extremely walkable—especially around the River Walk and convention center area. Walking between your hotel, sessions, and restaurants can save money and let you experience the city at the same time.

If you need transportation, VIA Metropolitan Transit buses provide inexpensive options, and day passes are much cheaper than rideshares or parking downtown.

Eat Smart Without Missing Out

San Antonio is famous for its food scene, but you don’t have to spend a lot to enjoy it. Students can keep costs down by:

  • Taking advantage of free hotel breakfast if available (many La Quinta locations offer it).
  • Visiting local taquerias and food trucks for affordable lunches.
  • Sharing meals with classmates at River Walk restaurants.
  • Bringing snacks for long convention days between sessions.

Take Advantage of Free Things to Do

San Antonio offers plenty of free or low-cost attractions within walking distance of the convention center, including:

  • Strolling along the River Walk, one of the city’s most iconic areas.
  • Visiting The Alamo, just a short walk from the convention center.
  • Exploring the outdoor Yanaguana Garden, a lively park space near Hemisfair.
  • Checking out public art, live music, and markets around downtown.

Experience Fiesta San Antonio

AAA 2026 will take place during Fiesta San Antonio, a citywide celebration that features parades, music, food, and cultural events across San Antonio. Many Fiesta activities are free or inexpensive, giving students a chance to experience the city’s vibrant culture while they’re in town.

Even if you only have an hour or two between sessions, you may be able to catch live music, see colorful Fiesta medals, or enjoy street celebrations happening throughout downtown.

Plan Travel Strategically

If flying, compare fares into San Antonio International Airport and book as early as possible. Students traveling from nearby states may want to consider carpooling with classmates to split gas costs.

Traveling to AAA 2026 doesn’t have to strain your student budget. With early planning, smart choices, and an eye on the many free experiences San Antonio offers, you can enjoy a meaningful, memorable convention experience without overspending.
