The SAA Chapter at Washington University in St. Louis proudly celebrated SAA Humanitarian Month in February and the World Health Organization’s (WHO) annual World Hearing Day on March 3, 2018. Our members are passionate about getting involved and educating family, friends, and the St. Louis community on how to improve their hearing health care. This year, we decided to use our Facebook page to educate viewers on proper hearing aid battery recycling as well as fundraise for the Ronald McDonald House Charities. Our hearing aid battery recycling video features Humanitarian Chair Melanie Lutz, and SAA President Kristen Gertson. Kristen explains the difference between mercury and mercury-free batteries, and gives viewers information about how they can recycle batteries safely in their own cities. In our video for the Ronald McDonald House Charities, Melanie describes how any school or organization can get involved in the Tab Top Collection program. Any tab tops collected are recycled and then turned into monetary donations benefiting the Ronald McDonald House Charities. As a chapter, we have found that participating in this collection program is simple, yet very rewarding. For World Hearing Day, we again took to our social media page to spread awareness about hearing preservation and hearing health care. Our SAA chapter enjoyed the opportunity to engage in outreach during Humanitarian Month, and we look forward to continuing to advocate and educate in the St. Louis community this year.
